Top 5 Wednesday: Books to Get You Out of a Reading Slump

For me, a book that pulls you out of a reading slump is one that is a favorite or one that perhaps is not very literary, perhaps middle grade, perhaps romance, the point is that it’s not hard.

Above all, I would like to say, that one thing that keeps me reading is audiobooks. I listen during my commute, while I put on my makeup, while working out, it’s just something that you can do at any time and keeps you reading. So, first and foremost, audiobooks. If you can’t afford audible which is like $14.95/month, try your local library, most library have a online partner like Hoopla or Overdrive which allows you to check out audiobooks. I personally do a combination of all three.

  • Starflight by Melissa Landers – this book is just FUN and if you mostly read YA, this will be right up your alley because it hits all the great YA fun points. It doesn’t take itself too seriously, which is one of my peeves of YA, it’s just here to show you a good time and it’s a great page-turner. It’s also great in audio (I did half in audio but I got impatient and finished it on kindle because I needed to know what happened!)
  • The School of Good and Evil by Soman Chainani – middle grade at it’s finest, this story of female friendship is both hilarious and fast-paced. This is another one that I did half in audio and then had to go buy the book because I needed to finish it that same night. I think this works great for people who just want a very funny read and enjoy tongue-in-cheek humor.
  • Harry Potter/Percy Jackson/Lemony Snicket – a great way to get out of a slump is to pick up your favorite books. Whatever it might be for you, read it again. It’s like coming back to a friend you haven’t seen in a long while.
  • The Grownup by Gillian Flynn or novelas! – Look for something under 100 pages, something you can finish fast. This one is great because it’s got the mystery horror feel to it.
  • Nimona by Noelle Stevenson or GRAPHIC NOVELS! – The best way is to pick up a graphic novel. I like fantasy/sci-fi graphic novels, they take me to a new world, they’re fast to read and I feel like I’m moving forward. Don’t feel bad if one month all you can manage is graphic novels, we’ve all been there.
